Eternity Is Closer Than You Think
We often live as though we have all the time in the world. We make plans for tomorrow, next year, and the distant future, but we rarely stop to consider how quickly life can change. The Bible reminds us that our time on earth is limited, while eternity has no end. That truth should encourage us to examine how we are living today.
James 4:14 says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Life is precious, but it is also brief. Every day we receive is a gift, and we should not assume that we are guaranteed another one.
The reality of eternity should also influence our priorities. Jesus asked, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36). There is nothing wrong with working hard, building a career, caring for your family, or pursuing meaningful goals. The danger comes when temporary success becomes more important than our relationship with God.
The Bible also tells us that life has an appointed end. Hebrews 9:27 says, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” This is a serious reminder that our earthly lives have eternal significance. We should not continually postpone repentance, obedience, or our decision to follow Christ.
Yet eternity is not only a warning; it is also a wonderful promise. Jesus said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Through Christ, we can have hope beyond this temporary life.
So don't wait for a better time to seek God. Don't assume there will always be another opportunity. Today is the day you have been given.
Live with eternity in your heart. Use your time wisely, love others sincerely, forgive freely, serve God faithfully, and keep your eyes on what truly lasts. Life may be short, but eternity is forever.
