Three Days of Darkness: What Happened After Jesus Was Buried?
The burial of Jesus Christ marked one of the most solemn and mysterious moments in Christian history. After His crucifixion, His body was laid in a tomb, sealed and guarded, while His followers were left in sorrow, confusion, and fear. These three days between His death and resurrection are often described as a time of deep darkness not only in the physical sense, but in the hearts of those who believed in Him.
According to Scripture, Jesus was buried by Joseph of Arimathea, who placed Him in a new tomb carved out of rock (Matthew 27:59–60). A large stone was rolled against the entrance, and Roman guards were stationed to secure it (Matthew 27:65–66). To many, this appeared to be the end. The One who had healed the sick, raised the dead, and proclaimed the Kingdom of God now lay silent.
Yet, spiritually, these three days were far from empty. The Bible gives glimpses into what took place beyond human sight. In 1 Peter 3:18–19, it is written that Christ, “being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,” went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison. This passage has been understood by many as evidence that Jesus descended into the realm of the dead, declaring His victory over sin and death.
The Apostles’ Creed reflects this belief, stating that He “descended into hell,” not as one defeated, but as a conqueror. In this hidden work, Christ demonstrated that even death could not hold Him. As Acts 2:24 declares, “God raised Him up, loosing the pains of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.”
Meanwhile, on earth, His disciples mourned. Hope seemed lost. The promises He had spoken of rising again on the third day were overshadowed by grief. Yet God’s plan was still unfolding. The silence of the tomb was not abandonment, but preparation.
On the third day, the darkness was broken. The stone was rolled away, not to let Jesus out, but to reveal that He had already risen. As Matthew 28:6 proclaims, “He is not here: for He is risen, as He said.” The despair of those three days gave way to the greatest victory in history.
These three days remind believers that God often works in silence and mystery. Even when all seems lost, He is still present, still powerful, and still fulfilling His promises. The darkness of the tomb was real, but it was not final. Light was already on its way.
